Welcome

This is the blog and public record of the Chicago Pizza Club. We eat a lot of pizza and share our thoughts on it as well as post any relevant pizza news we come across.

We invite you to post any comments on anywhere you have eaten under our review of that establishment. If you have any questions, please read the FAQs on the sidebar first to see if it has already been answered. Please note that we are at capacity and are not seeking new members. And finally, if you have a place you think we should try, have some other inquiry, or want to send us love/hatemail then please contact us at:

Michael's Pizzeria & Tavern [Meeting #41]

Michael's Pizzeria & Tavern
4091 N. Broadway Ave.
Tel: (773) 929-4149

CPC invaded Michael's on 4/17/07.

Michael's is a great place to gather with friends to watch sports on numerous flat screens spread throughout the pleasant bar/restaurant space, drink reasonably-priced pitchers of beer, and, of course ... eat pizza. The sauce is a bit sweet, and the crust is a bit dry, but the pizza is quite palatable. There is a good variety of fresh ingredients available.

We enjoyed the following pies:

  • Thin crust with bacon and tomatoes (a crowd favorite)
  • Thin crust taco pizza (B.Y.O. Doritos to add some crunch)
  • Extra thin crust with cheese
  • Deep Dish with pepperoni, garlic, and onion
  • Stuffed with sausage and spinach
Our pizzas arrived 35 minutes after we placed our order. The service was friendly and efficient, and accommodating of our large group (which took a while to order and lingered over beer mugs even after the pizza was consumed). The food and beverage prices are reasonable, and include an array of weeknight specials. For example, we enjoyed their Tuesday night Deep Dish special with a choice of 3 ingredients, for $14.99. The ambience of Michael's is partly that of a neighborhood sports bar and partly that of a casual restaurant, with some limited outdoor seating available.

Petey gives Michael's a score of 7.67/10.

  1. Taco Pizza was amazing... it wouldn't have been quite the same had the lettuce been soggy, but it wasn't, it was crisp as all hell and made the pizza delicous. The thin crust was pretty great too, I enjoyed all the pizzas we had... 9

  2. The pizza was all pretty good. The bacon and tomato combination on the thin crust pizza was a brilliant mingling of flavors and texture, not surprisingly suggested by CPC's team CIA grad. This was only my second time eating a taco pizza, and I was surprised by how tasty it was. The doritos supplied by the team photographer added a nice crunch and a kick of flavor. A lot of times you find such pies carpeted in mounds of flat lettuce, but Michael's got the balance of ingredients just right.

  3. I like this place but mostly for it's convenience as it's only 3 blocks from my house.

The pizza they make is pretty solid. Both crust and sauce are above average. It's not cracking my top ten but I think it's a good Lakeview offering. Sausage, onion, and garlic has been our favorite combination to order. I also enjoyed the bacon and tomato at the CPC meeting.

The taco pizza is ok but it's popular in our household but mostly for Happy Joe's taco pizza nostalgia. We add our own Doritos to Michael's. I still think that taco pizza could be done much better and I am still waiting to find a place that really perfects it. Rethinking the glob of sourcream in the center would be the first place to start.
